After the year-long closure during the stay-at-home order, the Museum of Photographic Arts will reopen to the public on Friday, April 16.
REOPENING SCHEDULE:
MOPA will open three days a week: Friday – Sunday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
MOPA’S SOCIAL DISTANCING:
MOPA visitors will be able to enjoy our innovative exhibitions once again. To ensure everyone’s safety, facial coverings must be worn at all times and staff and guests must remain six feet apart inside MOPA’s galleries.
Following CDC, local and state health guidelines, sanitation measures will be put in place throughout the museum and signs outside the museum doors and inside the galleries will list safety protocols.
WHY:
Especially during this time, MOPA wants to make photography accessible to everyone seeking to connect with art. By reopening its doors, the museum will create a place for big ideas and concepts to be shared through photography. As a center for visual learning, MOPA continues to encourage people to engage in the exchange of meaningful thought.
CURRENT EXHIBITIONS:
MOPA has two exhibitions currently on view.
- NEW “Beginnings, Forever: From the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts — Shinnyo-en Collection” – Every great photographer has a start. Beginnings, Forever represents the works of historic and emerging artists made before they were the age of 35. The exhibition is based on the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts’ “Young Portfolio” project.
- “Illusion: The Magic of Motion” welcomes guests who are looking to witness centuries of scientific and artistic explorations. Visitors will explore how early works and today’s contemporary art shaped how we see motion.
Some interactive displays in both exhibitions will remain closed at this time to protect the safety of guests.
MOPA’s PAY WHAT YOU WISH PROGRAM
MOPA welcomes visitors through donation-based admission. Guests can enjoy access to this state-of-the-art exhibition with suggested donations of $8 through MOPA’s Pay What You Wish program. The program is possible thanks to donor, member and guest contributions.

Thank you for your loyalty to the Museum of Photographic Arts. You’re the first to hear our plans for what remains of 2020, a year that proved our shared interest for critical thinking urgent. Throughout these past six months, your support set in motion the team spirit that’s championing through the uncertainty.
Today, we’re announcing a delayed reopening. MOPA will open no earlier than the 2020 holiday season. Though not an easy decision, the Museum leadership decided not to encourage people gathering indoors just yet.
However, our team and community work from home every day to achieve our mission and make it accessible to you. Through this unprecedented time, your kindness helped our Museum enact its mission without walls.
With your financial support, MOPA continues to provide learning opportunities online. No-cost activities like Photo Club for youth exist today because of you. Our visual learning experts developed programs in-house to ensure visual literacy is still the priority.
Only a handful of organizations in the world are dedicated to the photographic arts. Today, most people communicate through these three channels of visual imagery: still photography, film and video. It is these very art forms that influence modern society more than any other medium.
Thank you for being a pillar of visual literacy.

In response to the rising COVID cases in San Diego County, the Museum of Photographic Arts is temporarily closed beginning July 7, 2020. We’re supporting all the efforts to control this spread. Given the uncertainty of the weeks ahead, we will remain closed to the public until after Labor Day.
The Museum will provide additional updates on reopening, which will be in accordance with County and State orders.

To combat the spread of COVID-19, The Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park announced today its temporary closure will extend until the state’s Shelter in Place order is lifted. In addition to closing the Museum space to the public, MOPA is cancelling events, tours and film screenings. The Museum also cancelled its in-person summer camp program. This is an opportunity for the museum to return to its roots: a museum without walls, as it once used spaces throughout San Diego to bring art to all communities. Now, MOPA is taking its experience online and becoming a virtual refuge for those seeking a new adventure.

The Museum of Photographic Arts at Balboa Park announced today its temporary closure effective Monday, March 16 through the end of March until further notice. Museum leadership follows guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health and San Diego County Public Health.
MOPA leadership arrived at the decision through statewide advisory to ban any gathering with attendance larger than 250 in efforts to slow spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), in addition to the announcement by San Diego County officials of a likelihood of community spread in San Diego County.
“Our top priority is the health of our MOPA team, patrons and visitors,” said Deborah Klochko, chief curator and executive director at MOPA. “To ensure continuous health in our community, we chose the scenario that minimizes spread.”
In addition to closing the Museum space to the public, MOPA is cancelling events, tours and film screenings. Staff will continue working to ensure operations of the Museum and ensure the safety of the Museum and its holdings.

MOPA is Open: What to Know Before Your Visit
Given our top priority is the health of our MOPA team, patrons and visitors, the Museum continues to employ safety measures as a result of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as determined by San Diego County and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
We have taken additional measures at the Museum to ensure a healthy environment for anyone who steps foot into MOPA:
- All public facing events in March have been cancelled, including tours, gallery talks and film screenings,
- We have heavily stocked handwashing supplies available for employees and visitors,
- We have increased frequency of sanitizing door handles, and
- Interactive experiences are equipped with sanitizing wipes for individual use
MOPA leadership encourages all staff to stay home if they feel unwell.
If you were planning a MOPA visit and are not feeling well, please reschedule. We’re happy to immerse in our engaging exhibition spaces with you at a later date. Through the announcement by San Diego County officials of a likelihood of community spread in San Diego County, MOPA advises people at higher risk of getting sick to stay home.

The Museum continues to closely follow the recommendations by San Diego County and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We have restocked handwashing supplies available for employees and visitors. MOPA leadership encourages all staff to stay home if they feel unwell and placed reminders for sanitation in handwashing stations.
